About The Song

“Your Song” was released by Three Dog Night as an album track on their fourth studio album It Ain’t Easy, issued in March 1970 via Dunhill Records. Produced by Gabriel Mekler, the song runs 3:28 and features Chuck Negron on lead vocals, supported by the band’s renowned three-part vocal harmonies, piano, and a warm, soulful rock arrangement that highlights their signature sound.
Written by Elton John (music) and Bernie Taupin (lyrics), this was the very first released recording of the song. Three Dog Night recorded it before Elton John’s own version appeared on his self-titled album in April 1970. At the time, Elton John was an opening act for Three Dog Night, and the band chose not to release “Your Song” as a single out of respect, wanting to give the then-emerging British artist a chance to have a hit with it.
The lyrics express simple, sincere gratitude and affection: “It’s a little bit funny, this feeling inside / I’m not one of those who can easily hide / I don’t have much money, but boy if I did / I’d buy a big house where we both could live.” The song’s charm lies in its humble, heartfelt honesty and charming imperfections, with lines like “I sat on the roof and kicked off the moss” and “How wonderful life is while you’re in the world.” Chuck Negron’s expressive lead vocal, combined with the group’s smooth harmonies, gives the track an emotional warmth and accessibility.
Although not issued as a commercial single by Three Dog Night, the song received significant airplay from the album and helped It Ain’t Easy reach No. 16 on the Billboard 200. It has since appeared on numerous compilations, including The Best of Three Dog Night and various greatest hits packages. Many fans and critics consider their version a strong, soulful interpretation that stands alongside Elton John’s more famous recording.

Lyric

It’s a little bit funny this feeling inside
I’m not one of those who can easily hide
I don’t have much money but boy if I did
I’d buy a big house where we both could live
If I was a sculptor, but then again, no
Or a man who makes potions in a travelling show
I know it’s not much but it’s the best I can do
My gift is my song and this one’s for you
And you can tell everybody this is your song
It may be quite simple but now that it’s done
I hope you don’t mind
I hope you don’t mind that I put down in words
How wonderful life is while you’re in the world
I sat on the roof and kicked off the moss
Well a few of the verses well they’ve got me quite cross
But the sun’s been quite kind while I wrote this song
It’s for people like you that keep it turned on
So excuse me forgetting but these things I do
You see I’ve forgotten if they’re green or they’re blue
Anyway the thing is what I really mean
Yours are the sweetest eyes I’ve ever seen
